Better Beauty ATX

In 2016 I joined a movement to change the beauty and cosmetics industry for the better. I want my children to grow up in a society where they’re not having to constantly check labels out of fear that whatever product they’re looking to use could cause irreversible damage, including reproductive and endocrine disorders, or even cancer.
Beautycounter is an education first company, on a mission to create safe and high performing products and get them into the hands of everyone. I’m so excited to share this mission with you all, and look forward to switching to safer!

New mom must-haves!

“What should I buy before baby arrives?” This is something all new moms ask at least a dozen times before the baby arrives (heck, even sometimes after the baby arrives). Admittedly, in my last pregnancy I spent far too much time researching this very question. While I am no expert, I do feel like I have an opinion that other moms and mom-to-be’s may appreciate. So, here it is, my list of must-haves to prepare yourself for the new baby.

DIY: Padsicles

As if having a baby wasn’t glamorous enough, us women are blessed with all sorts of discomfort before, during and after labor. While there isn’t much you can do before and during labor, aside from maybe an Epidural if that floats your boat, there is one thing you can do to help soothe your lady-bits after having pushed a bowling ball out of your ute. I came across this little gem in my research during my last pregnancy, and while I unfortunately never got to put them to use thanks to Alexander being a breechling which required a Cesarean (more on that later), I sure as heck made a large batch of these to have on the ready. I’ll be whipping up a batch of these around 34-36 weeks when getting my birth kit ready for Baby Girl Nichols to make her grand debut. It’s all about being prepared!

Ladies, I give you the Post-Partum Padsicles. Ever heard of the Ring of Fire in birth? No? You should go look that up. I’ll wait. You and your lady-bits will thank me for this not-so-secret recipe later.

Baby update: It’s a…

I really don’t know how time has escaped me. Between running after a very mobile toddler, working a full time job, and growing a baby, I hardly have time for anything else! Speaking of growing a baby, we are getting so excited to meet this little bundle of joy. A few weeks back, we went in for our anatomy scan ultrasound, which is performed between 18-20 weeks. The importance of this ultrasound is to make sure baby is growing properly, but the added bonus is that we’d get a chance at finding out the sex of this little peanut!

While I had my suspicions on the sex of our baby, I also doubted myself. I was convinced this baby was a girl, if not purely because this pregnancy feels so different from my pregnancy with Alexander. But then again, I also thought that maybe Alexander would be a girl because both of our families seem to be heavy in the Estrogen. Of course, it was a 50-50 chance I was correct and regardless if this baby was a boy or girl, we would love it more than ever.

What a relief!

There is nothing worse than watching your little one struggling day in and day out, and not being able to help provide relief. This has been our daily life since Alexander was about 4 months old. My sweet boy has been battling intense eczema, and it has been heartbreaking to say the least. We saw the pediatrician countless times, the pediatric dermatologist, and the pediatric allergist. None of these amazing doctors could really help.

It Takes a Village…

“It takes a Village to raise a Child.” – African Proverb

Becoming a mother is not for the weak minded, and raising a child is not an easy task. I say that in the kindest possible way. Don’t go into motherhood thinking it will be a breeze. Yes, you can certainly have the “Unicorn” baby (aka perfect little snowflake) who sleeps through the night, is well behaved and breastfeeds like a champ. You can have also have the high-maintenance baby who won’t sleep more than 30 minutes at a time, demands to be held round the clock, and has temper tantrums like no other. Regardless of how things are going, we can all agree that at some point you’ll have that moment where you want to cry, scream, or perhaps crawl into a bottle of Pinot Noir. Let’s face it, we all need support.

So who do you turn to for guidance? Your Village.

One Day… Soon.

Being a full time working Mama with a toddler who just wants to go go go, it seems like these last few weeks have slipped by in the blink of an eye. Alexander took his first unassisted steps two weeks ago, however he has yet to do it again (go figure). His vocabulary is exploding and it seems like he has a new word every day. We love having our “conversations” with the little guy, and seeing his excitement when he puts 2+2 together with a word and an object is incredible. He recently has become obsessed with books, and is always asking for a book or pointing and saying “my book” — I cannot believe what a smart little guy he is!

On top of all of his new developments, Alexander is really starting to show off how affectionate he can be. He always has to snuggle with his Giraffe or his Mickey Mouse, or Mama or Dada, Nana or Papa, or even his Dog. He loves to give kisses and will “allow” you kiss him on the forehead (such a ham!). And he is so incredibly gentle! Alexander makes sure to use the lightest touch when inspecting new or interesting objects. All of this just reassures our confidence that our little guy will be an incredible big brother one day.

Tula… in the Wild!

Over the last 14 months, I’ve been able to try other carriers in my babywearing journey. Attending a Babywearing play date was very helpful (see post: Carry them close: Let’s Begin) as I was determined to try them all. Different brands offer different features and benefits. Front carry. Forward-facing front carry. Hip carry. Back carry. Buckles. Ties. Pockets. No pockets. Hood. No Hood. I tried to tell myself “one is enough” but let’s be honest… what fun is that? I had my Ergo. I loved my Ergo. But I couldn’t help myself. Ergo was the gateway into my babywearing addiction. I needed more! Continue reading →

Black Bean, Avocado Salad

Sometimes you just want to eat healthy, right? No? Ok, how about fresh and delicious? Got it! This is one of my favorites, and is oh-so easy to make. No cooking required and takes maybe 10 minutes to prepare.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cucumber, peeled and diced
  • 2 medium ripe tomatoes, diced
  • 2 ripe avocados, diced
  • 15.5 oz can organic black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/3 to 1/2 red onion, minced
  • 2 tbsp fresh cilantro, minced
  • 2 limes
  • salt and fresh pepper

Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl. Squeeze lime juice over the mix and season with S&P to taste. Pairs nicely with a Sauvignon Blanc.

Enjoy!

XO

Other ideas:

  • Add 1 can of organic corn
  • Mix it up with heirloom tomatoes or cherry tomatoes
  • Serve with cooked salmon to make it a meal!
